Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) is developing its own chip for artificial intelligence (AI) PCs. Samsung plans to complete development as early as next year and compete against Big Tech firms for the core brain technology of the rapidly growing AI PC market, following its expansion in mobile.
According to industry sources on the 9th, Samsung Electronics' System LSI Division is developing "Gaia," an AI PC chip based on a 4-nanometer (nm, one-billionth of a meter) process. Targeting mass production as early as next year, the company is in talks with some PC manufacturers over supply.
If Gaia succeeds in the market, Samsung Electronics will expand its system-on-chip (SoC) lineup to PCs, following its "Exynos" mobile chips. Like competing products, Gaia will be equipped with a neural processing unit (NPU) and other components to support performance specialized for AI computing.
Samsung Electronics is also expected to re-enter the PC chip market for the first time in about a decade through Gaia. Samsung expanded into PCs in 2012 by installing Exynos in Chromebooks, but shut down the business two years later.
