Mirae Asset Group is accelerating its expansion into digital finance after completing the Fair Trade Commission's (FTC) merger review for its acquisition of Korbit, a domestic cryptocurrency exchange. The group aims to set a new standard in the asset market by building a global investment platform that spans both traditional and digital assets.
According to Mirae Asset Group on the 9th, the completion of the FTC review has secured the institutional foundation for the group's future digital asset business. The group plans to use this as an opportunity to grow customer assets and contribute to strengthening the competitiveness of Korea's financial industry.
The acquisition goes beyond simply securing an exchange; its purpose is to break down the boundary between traditional and digital finance. Mirae Asset plans to build a new investment ecosystem by combining the global investment capabilities it has accumulated in its securities and asset management businesses with Korbit's digital asset infrastructure.
Korbit will become the core of Mirae Asset's global investment platform strategy going forward. The goal is to create an environment where a wide range of investment assets can be managed within a single framework, regardless of country or asset type.
Mirae Asset previously laid the groundwork for integrating traditional and digital assets by launching MAPS (Mirae Asset Portfolio Service), a global investment platform, in Hong Kong in June this year. By securing domestic digital asset trading infrastructure through the Korbit acquisition, the group has further strengthened its ability to execute the global platform strategy.
The acquisition is also expected to give concrete shape to "Mirae Asset 3.0," the mid- to long-term growth strategy laid out by Park Hyeon-joo, the group's Global Strategy Officer (GSO). Digital finance is seen as becoming a core growth engine for the group.
Mirae Asset plans to gradually expand a range of digital financial services — including stablecoins, custody, real-world assets (RWAs), and digital payment and storage — in line with future regulatory developments. In response to growing market participation by corporations and institutional investors, the group also plans to provide comprehensive services covering research, investment information, asset custody, and security and operational support.
Investor protection and market trust are also key priorities. Mirae Asset intends to apply internal controls and risk management systems at the level of regulated financial institutions to Korbit to enhance trading stability. The group also plans to strengthen abnormal transaction detection systems and security monitoring, and refine wallet key management and asset custody procedures to improve the overall safety of digital asset trading.
Investment information services will be strengthened as well. The group plans to expand the functions of Korbit's research center and reinforce investor education content and risk guidance to deepen understanding of digital assets. The vision is to develop Korbit beyond a simple trading function into an information-driven investment platform.
"Digital assets are no longer a short-term investment vehicle for certain investors but are establishing themselves as a new asset class in the global financial industry," a Mirae Asset official said. "By combining the digital asset trading infrastructure Korbit has built with Mirae Asset's risk management, internal control, and investor protection capabilities, we will create a new standard for the global asset market and contribute to developing Korea's digital asset industry into a trusted ecosystem."
