LG (003550.KS) has begun developing a "world model," a physical artificial intelligence (AI) brain that learns physical laws to dramatically improve the performance of robots and smart factories. As high-performance world models, the control towers for robots and machines, have emerged as the core of physical AI competitiveness, LG is mobilizing group-wide capabilities to secure an early lead in the related technology.
According to business circles on the 9th, LG CNS signed a partnership agreement earlier this month with PhysicsX, a UK physical AI startup, to jointly develop an industry-specialized world model. The world model will be developed by combining PhysicsX's manufacturing AI technology with the vast on-site data LG CNS has secured through its "AI transformation (AX) business." This marks the first time LG has undertaken world model development across its group affiliates.
PhysicsX holds an industrial AI model that can dramatically shorten the design and manufacturing processes in fields such as aerospace and automobiles. Its technological prowess is strong enough to attract investment from companies including Nvidia, and last month it was recognized with a corporate valuation of $2.4 billion (about 3.6 trillion won).
The world model, the most important technology as the brain of physical AI, is an AI model that understands the physical laws governing how the world moves, such as universal gravitation. The "behavior model," the current mainstream in physical AI brain development, is created by learning large amounts of behavioral data that mimic the movements of both people and objects. In contrast, the world model learns physical laws themselves, enabling robots or machines to judge how they should move on their own. It is the highest-level technology in physical AI that can overcome the limitations of behavior models, such as data shortages.
