
LG Display (034220.KS) released research findings showing that higher refresh rates on gaming monitors—the number of times an image updates per second—improve actual gaming performance. The company aims to accelerate its push into the premium gaming display market by experimentally proving the performance of high-refresh-rate organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels.
LG Display said on the 9th that it presented a research paper analyzing the impact of gaming monitor refresh rates on actual game performance at international academic conferences. The paper is titled "Analysis of the Impact of Refresh Rates on First-Person Shooter (FPS) Game Performance."
The study was conducted as a blind test with 31 adult casual gamers. Participants played FPS games in four refresh rate environments—60Hz, 240Hz, 360Hz, and 480Hz—and both game performance and user satisfaction were evaluated.
The experiment confirmed a tendency for gaming performance to improve as refresh rates increased. The "hit score," which measures the number of times an enemy was struck, increased by up to 38% at 480Hz compared with 60Hz. Even compared with 240Hz, which is already classified as a high refresh rate, the 480Hz environment showed an additional improvement of approximately 10%.
User evaluations produced similar results. Participants responded that as refresh rates increased, screen transitions felt smoother and tracking moving targets became easier, and overall preference rose accordingly.
LG Display explained that these results stem from the characteristics of OLED. As refresh rates increase, input lag—the time it takes for an input signal to appear on screen—decreases, and motion blur, the afterimage that occurs on fast-moving screens, is also reduced, improving responsiveness and visibility. In the actual experiment, the 480Hz environment was measured to have an input lag more than 10ms (milliseconds) shorter than the 60Hz environment.
Based on these research results, the company plans to further strengthen the competitiveness of its high-refresh-rate gaming OLED products.
LG Display previously developed the "27-inch 540/720Hz DFR OLED" panel in May, which achieved the world's highest refresh rate, and received the "Display of the Year" award, the top honor from the Society for Information Display (SID).
