Renault Korea will develop software-defined vehicle (SDV) technology together with Kakao Mobility.
Renault Korea said Wednesday that it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Kakao Mobility "for next-generation vehicle experience innovation."
The two companies agreed to jointly develop high-precision maps and software technology for implementing advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). They will also strengthen cooperation in next-generation in-vehicle infotainment and connectivity services.
Renault signaled the partnership last month at "Next Rise," a startup tech expo, where it displayed a vehicle equipped with Kakao Mobility services. The company drew attention from visitors by showcasing a service that allows access to the Kakao T taxi driver app through the panoramic screen of its sport utility vehicle (SUV), the "Grand Koleos." The rear seats were fitted with an entertainment system exclusively for taxi passengers, providing trip information and customized content.
Nicolas Paris, president of Renault Korea, who attended the signing ceremony, said, "This agreement is a starting point for creating new customer experiences and innovative services suited to the era of software-defined vehicles." He added, "We will bring together Renault's vehicle development know-how and the capabilities of our partners to present innovative services."
Ryu Geung-seon, CEO of Kakao Mobility, said, "We will expand strategic partnerships with various automotive-related companies, including global carmakers, to continue driving next-generation mobility technology innovation."
