SK Chemicals (285130) has expanded its product portfolio by applying technology that enhances the flexibility of decorative sheets used in furniture and interiors.
SK Chemicals said on the 30th that it developed a flexible decorative sheet incorporating its elastic material SKYPEL through collaboration with Toray Advanced Materials. Hansol HomeDeco applied the decorative sheet to its existing "Story Film" product, unveiling a version with improved processability and applicability.
The newly developed decorative sheet enhances flexibility while retaining the advantages of "GAG PET" film, which has been used for premium interiors and furniture. GAG PET film is a composite sheet material that applies a PET-based GAG structure. With high transparency, gloss, and vivid color rendering, it is used as a finishing material for premium furniture and interiors.
To this, SK Chemicals added SKYPEL, a polyester-based thermoplastic elastomer (TPEE), to increase the material's flexibility. SKYPEL combines the flexibility of rubber with the strength of engineering plastics, offering excellent heat resistance, mechanical strength, impact resistance, and chemical resistance.
Story Film with SKYPEL applied maintains the appearance quality such as color and gloss of the existing product, while enabling tight, lift-free application even on curved or angular structures. This allows flat and curved surfaces to be unified with a single material, achieving design consistency throughout a space.
SK Chemicals explained that the achievement is significant in that it combined each company's technical capabilities based on a value chain spanning "material–intermediate product–finished product," enhancing the performance and practical applicability of existing products.
Kim Eung-su, head of SK Chemicals' Green Materials Division, said, "This project is a case where material technology was applied to an existing product to achieve substantial performance improvement," adding, "Going forward, we will continue to expand into various application areas together with customers based on differentiated specialty materials."
SK Chemicals plans to continue expanding the application areas of its materials through collaboration with partners that have expertise in each field, based on its diverse specialty materials portfolio.
