
"Toss POS," a store management and payment system operated by TossPlace, a subsidiary of Toss, experienced an error during lunchtime on Thursday, followed by another error in the evening, causing continued inconvenience for small business owners.
According to industry sources, starting around 5:45 p.m. that day, a series of posts appeared on online communities for small business owners reporting that Toss POS was not working properly and was disrupting their operations. One business owner wrote, "The system had not been restored even past 7 p.m.," adding, "I did not receive any text message informing me of the recovery status of the disruption."
Toss POS is a point-of-sale (POS) system used by restaurants, cafes and other businesses to manage orders, payments and sales. As of the end of March this year, the number of merchants nationwide that have installed Toss POS was reported to be approximately 300,000.
In fact, some stores were found to have experienced intermittent disruptions in the Toss POS payment process until that evening. Some users asked other Toss POS merchants whether they had received recovery notification text messages and whether their systems were operating normally.
Earlier, Toss POS had experienced a payment disruption during lunchtime starting around 11:40 a.m. that day. Some terminals displayed a message reading "A problem has occurred with the network connection," and TossPlace said the system was restored to normal around 12:10 p.m. TossPlace explained at the time that it had identified an overload in an internal data processing section as the cause of the disruption and was carrying out work to prevent a recurrence. However, it was reported that at some stores the lunchtime disruption was not fully resolved and the problem continued, or that the error recurred afterward.
A TossPlace official said, "The same problem that occurred at lunch happened at several merchants," adding, "We are responding to individual merchants one by one and are also working to identify the exact cause of the overload."
