
Coway has proven the safety of its purified water through a microplastic detection test on its water purifiers.
Coway said Tuesday that no microplastics 1㎛ (micrometer) or larger were detected in tests conducted on purified water from its "Icon Water Purifier 3" and "Ice Water Purifier RO."
As consumer concerns over the potential risks of microplastics have grown recently, interest in drinking water safety has also increased. In response, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has included microplastics on its list of preliminary regulated contaminants for drinking water, and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has also begun establishing standards for microplastic management.
To respond to these changing global standards and allow consumers to use water purifiers with greater peace of mind, Coway conducted tests through KOTITI Testing & Research Institute, an accredited testing organization, on the direct-flow "Icon Water Purifier 3 (CHP-7220N)" and the tank-type "Ice Water Purifier RO (CHPI-7521L)."
Following the international standard analysis method "ISO 16094-2," tests checking for microplastics 1㎛ or larger found no microplastics in the products. The test is significant in that it directly verified whether microplastics were present in water that had actually passed through the purifier, taking into account not only the filters' microplastic removal performance but also the safety of the materials inside the purifier.
Coway had previously obtained microplastic removal performance certification for its Nanotrap filters, direct-flow water purifiers, and reverse osmosis water purifiers. Through this test, the company plans to expand the scope of microplastic verification from filter performance to purified water standards, proactively responding to changing global standards and strengthening consumer trust in the quality of its water purifiers.
