
Samsung Heavy Industries (010140.KS) said Friday it successfully held the launch ceremony for the "Cedar FLNG," a floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) production facility to be deployed off the coast of Kitimat, British Columbia, Canada. With this launch, Samsung Heavy Industries' Geoje shipyard set the world's first record of building three large FLNG units simultaneously at a single yard, establishing itself as a key hub for global LNG production facilities.
The Cedar FLNG is a near-shore facility that can receive natural gas from onshore, then liquefy, store and offload it. The vessel's hull spans 2.5 times the area of a soccer field, and its launch weight alone reaches approximately 50,000 tons, making it an ultra-large offshore plant. Following the launch, Samsung Heavy Industries plans to manufacture and install topside plant modules ranging from 2,000 to 7,000 tons, carry out LNG cargo tank work, complete sea trials, and make final delivery in the first half of 2028.
With this achievement, Samsung Heavy Industries' Geoje shipyard has secured an unmatched record of building a total of three large FLNG units sequentially along its yard quay, including Malaysia's Petronas "ZLNG" and Italy's ENI "Coral Norte FLNG."

Samsung Heavy Industries cited manufacturing innovation centered on its "smart shipyard" as the driving force behind the simultaneous construction of three units at a single yard. The company has built an engineering data hub (S-EDH) that connects data across all divisions including design, procurement and production, and is pursuing a "3X (DX, AX, RX)" transformation that combines digital, artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics technologies.
Through this, the company explained, it has realized process optimization and design-and-production automation, while establishing standardization and systematic management systems for complex offshore plant processes, thereby enhancing its construction competitiveness.
Lee Dong-hyun, head of Samsung Heavy Industries' offshore business division, said, "The successful launch of the Cedar FLNG and the world's first simultaneous construction of three FLNG units are achievements of manufacturing innovation at Samsung Heavy Industries' smart shipyard."
