
S-OIL (010950) is launching a demonstration of immersion cooling technology for artificial intelligence (AI) data centers through industry-academia cooperation.
S-OIL said Wednesday it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Sungkyunkwan University's Supercomputing Center and Global Standard Technology Co. (GST) to demonstrate and strengthen cooperation on immersion cooling technology for AI data centers.
The spread of AI has made addressing data centers' power consumption and heat generation a critical challenge. This agreement was also reached to establish a cooperation framework on immersion cooling technology for building sustainable, future-oriented data centers. The parties to the agreement plan to pursue an integrated demonstration linking immersion cooling fluid, cooling equipment, and actual high-performance computing operating environments.
The immersion cooling demonstration test will first be conducted in a high-heat graphics processing unit (GPU) server environment at Sungkyunkwan University's Supercomputing Center. S-OIL will handle the supply and analysis of its immersion cooling fluid "S-OIL e-Cooling Solution" as well as technical consulting, while Sungkyunkwan University's Supercomputing Center will provide the GPU servers and demonstration environment. GST will carry out the operation of immersion cooling equipment and data analysis.
Through this demonstration, the parties plan to verify the cooling performance, stability, and operational reliability of immersion cooling technology in actual AI and high-performance computing environments, and to secure the commercialization potential of next-generation data center thermal management solutions.
This cooperation is being pursued in connection with the Ministry of Science and ICT project "Development of Computing Resource-Intensive Artificial Intelligence Application Technology," which Sungkyunkwan University's Supercomputing Center was awarded. The related demonstration and research will run through May 2029.
"We plan to strengthen the competitiveness of immersion cooling technology and expand cooperation in the AI infrastructure ecosystem through demonstrations based on the nation's top-level supercomputing operating environment," S-OIL said.
