LG (003550) said Thursday it held a two-day "Middle School Immersion Camp," a residential camp program of the "LG Multicultural School of Love," in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, starting Wednesday, to nurture youth from multicultural families into global talent. The company selected about 90 middle school students from across the country and provided intensive education to enhance their language skills and understanding of global cultures.
The Middle School Immersion Camp is part of the LG Multicultural School, a public-private-academic corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative that LG has operated for 16 years since 2010. Through the Multicultural School, LG selects about 450 elementary and middle school students each year in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, providing two years of education. In partnership with Seoul National University and Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, the program has focused on teaching languages and cultures of eight countries, including Vietnam, China, Thailand and Russia, as well as science. Cumulative graduates totaled about 7,000 as of last year.
The Middle School Immersion Camp was designed to allow students who have received online education to interact with other students offline and confirm their linguistic and cultural identities. Participants intensively study the languages and cultures of their parents' home countries while exploring career paths. Senior alumni who have advanced to university or entered the workforce after going through the Middle School Immersion Camp also participate as mentors.
LG plans to continue expanding its educational activities for multicultural youth by holding an elementary vacation camp and a science course camp at Seoul National University in August, the middle school immersion camp in September, and a national bilingual speech contest co-hosted with the Ministry of Education in November. Through the Multicultural School, LG plans to go beyond simply supporting multicultural families and secure global talent. Graduates of the Multicultural School are already active in schools, public institutions, Big Tech and financial firms.
LG explained that the program aligns with Chairman Kwang-mo Koo's talent development philosophy that "innovation that changes the world begins with talent, and they are the source of national competitiveness." "Multicultural youth are global talent who will resolve Korea's demographic cliff and serve as a future engine of innovation," an LG official said. "We will continue to support them so that they can settle into all levels of society and grow into a future generation that thrives on the global stage."
