Hyundai Glovis (086280) said Tuesday it will extend its partnership with global nonprofit The Ocean Cleanup through 2030 to expand support for marine plastic waste removal activities.
Since signing the partnership with The Ocean Cleanup in 2023, Hyundai Glovis has supported data collection on the location and scale of marine plastic waste, as well as transportation of waste collection equipment. The two sides agreed to broaden the scope of cooperation and extend its duration.
The Ocean Cleanup, a Netherlands-based nonprofit organization, conducts marine plastic removal activities by intercepting plastic waste flowing from rivers into the ocean and by collecting and recycling waste already accumulated in the sea.
Hyundai Glovis supports marine plastic data collection by utilizing the Automated Debris Imaging System (ADIS), an ocean plastic observation system developed by The Ocean Cleanup. ADIS automatically detects and photographs plastic waste floating on the sea through cameras installed on vessels and records location information.
Hyundai Glovis currently operates a total of 20 ADIS cameras installed on 10 pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs), providing the collected data to The Ocean Cleanup. This allows the gathering of information on the location and scale of plastic-dense areas in major shipping routes, including the Pacific Ocean.
Through its collaboration with Hyundai Glovis, The Ocean Cleanup has collected more than 50,000 tons of plastic waste from oceans and river basins worldwide between 2023 and March of this year. This is equivalent to the load of approximately 10,000 five-ton waste collection trucks operating in Korea.
Hyundai Glovis plans to continue providing additional support for The Ocean Cleanup's marine cleanup activities. The company will expand the number of vessels equipped with ADIS and review various cooperation measures utilizing its global logistics and transportation network.

"We will continue to make practical contributions to environmental protection by leveraging our global maritime network and logistics capabilities."
