Seoul has finalized the redevelopment master plan for Hannam 2 District, a key downtown redevelopment site, paving the way for the project to accelerate.
The redevelopment master plan for Hannam 2 District, an aging low-rise residential area near Itaewon in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, has been confirmed, giving momentum to the district's redevelopment project. With the plan covering the supply of more than 1,300 units including public housing, along with the expansion of public parking lots, parks and roads, improvements to living infrastructure in the Itaewon area are also expected to gain speed.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government said Thursday that the "Hannam 2 District Redevelopment Master Plan Amendment" was approved with revisions at the 4th Urban Redevelopment Committee meeting held the previous day.
The target site is the area around 272-3 Bogwang-dong, Yongsan-gu. Under the revised plan, the area will be transformed into a residential complex with a total of 1,311 units, including 197 public housing units. The 197 public housing units will be prioritized for locations with convenient access to infrastructure such as Itaewon Station, parks and schools.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government explained that the plan was designed to efficiently reorganize infrastructure in a way that harmonizes with the nearby Itaewon Special Tourist Zone. In particular, a public parking lot with a total of 321 spaces will be built by utilizing the space beneath newly established parks, social welfare facilities and public offices. Expectations are rising that the plan will help ease chronic parking shortages in the Itaewon area.
The plan also includes measures to improve pedestrian and school commuting environments. A children's park will be placed adjacent to Bogwang Elementary School, and Bogwang-ro will be widened to reorganize vehicle and pedestrian routes.
The project is also picking up pace. Hannam 2 District began resident relocation in January this year and aims to complete the relocation within the year, with groundbreaking targeted for the second half of next year.
"The full-scale progress of the Hannam 2 District project is expected to have a positive impact on other districts within the Hannam area," the Seoul Metropolitan Government said. "We plan to provide active support so that the project can be pushed forward swiftly until groundbreaking."
