
Rznomics (476830.KQ), an RNA-based gene therapy developer, said Wednesday that its candidate for primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), "RZ-001," has received Regenerative Medicine Advanced Therapy (RMAT) designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
RMAT is a key FDA accelerated development program granted only to regenerative medicine candidates that target serious or life-threatening conditions and have demonstrated innovation and therapeutic potential in early-stage clinical trials. Therapies with RMAT designation can accelerate their clinical and approval strategies through close consultation with the FDA and benefit from various regulatory advantages, including priority review, rolling review and accelerated approval. Rznomics said an FDA project manager (PM) was assigned on May 7, U.S. time.
RZ-001 is a next-generation cancer therapy based on Rznomics' proprietary ribozyme-based RNA editing platform technology. Leveraging platform strengths that enhance both tumor selectivity and safety, the drug offers new possibilities for liver cancer patients with limited treatment options. RZ-001 previously received Orphan Drug Designation from the FDA for its liver cancer indication in 2024 and Fast Track designation in 2025.
Unlike other accelerated development programs, RMAT is known to have a high bar for approval, as it requires both the potential to address "unmet medical needs" and clinical evidence to support that potential. Rznomics said the designation carries significant weight, as the FDA recognized RZ-001's clinical potential and innovation following meaningful early signals confirmed in interim results of its Phase 1b/2a trial presented at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR 2026) in April.
"The RMAT designation for RZ-001 is the result of the FDA recognizing the innovation and competitiveness of Rznomics' RNA editing platform," CEO Lee Seong-wook said. "We will concentrate our capabilities on global development and commercialization so that we can present an innovative treatment option in the liver cancer field, where unmet medical needs are high."
