Hanwha's three defense affiliates — Hanwha Aerospace (012450.KS), Hanwha Systems (272210.KS), and Hanwha Ocean (042660.KS) — said Tuesday they hosted a Korea-U.S. defense cooperation meeting on Monday, inviting a high-level U.S. defense delegation led by former U.S. Pacific Command Commander Harry Harris to their headquarters.
The event, held at the Hanwha Building in Janggyo-dong, Seoul, was attended by about 20 people, including former Commander Harris, newly appointed general-level officers from the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps, and senior officials from the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). From Hanwha, President Suh Wook of Hanwha Aerospace and other key executives from Hanwha Systems and Hanwha Ocean attended.
Hanwha introduced the global business status and future vision of the group's defense sector, as well as the core capabilities of its major weapons systems, and shared cooperation plans that could contribute to the Korea-U.S. alliance in the land, air, and maritime domains. The U.S. participants were said to have shown keen interest in Hanwha's defense capabilities.
Former Commander Harris, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, is a key figure in Indo-Pacific regional security, having served as commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet and of U.S. Pacific Command. He served as U.S. Ambassador to South Korea from 2018 to 2021 and currently serves as a senior fellow at the National Defense University (NDU) and honorary chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea.
"Through this meeting, we will build trust between high-level officials on both sides and actively identify concrete cooperation agendas," a Hanwha Aerospace official said.
