Samsung Electronics Service said on Monday that its use of refurbished parts for home appliances in the first quarter of this year increased more than fourfold compared with the same period last year. Ahead of Earth Day on Tuesday, Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) emphasized that it is actively participating in the government's eco-friendly policies through measures such as expanding the use of refurbished parts.
Refurbished parts are components recovered from existing products and precisely processed to deliver the same performance and quality as new ones. When consumers repair appliances using refurbished parts, they can reduce parts costs by up to 50 percent while still receiving the same one-year quality warranty as with new parts. Samsung Electronics Service offers refurbished parts for repairs of various products, including printed board assemblies (PBAs) for air conditioners and washing machines, vacuum cleaner sensors, and steam injection devices for AirDressers.
In December 2024, the Fair Trade Commission (FTC) revised its enforcement ordinance to encourage the circulation of social resources, expanding the use of refurbished parts — previously limited to smartphones and TVs — to all electronic products, actively promoting their adoption.
Samsung Electronics Service is also expanding single-component repair, another eco-friendly repair method. Instead of replacing an entire module at once, single-component repair involves precisely disassembling only the faulty part. This approach reuses as many functional components as possible, reducing electronic waste. Repair costs are also about 30 to 50 percent lower. The method is applied to products such as TV panels and smartphone displays.
Samsung Electronics said that about 40 percent of TV panel repairs in the first quarter of this year were handled through single-component repair. The company said it plans to continue reducing repair cost burdens and increasing resource recycling through innovation in repair technology.
