The latest theatrical release of Japanese animation "Demon Slayer" has grossed more than 1 trillion won worldwide, setting the highest box office record in Japanese film history.
Distributor Aniplex announced that the theatrical film "Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Arc Part 1" achieved cumulative global box office revenue of 117.9 billion yen (approximately 1.0992 trillion won), according to a report by Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei) on Sunday. The film ended its theatrical run on Friday, except at select theaters.
This marks the first time a Japanese film has exceeded 100 billion yen in global box office earnings. The worldwide audience reached approximately 98.52 million viewers, with 71.06 million of them outside Japan, generating roughly twice the revenue of the domestic market. Domestic box office revenue in Japan totaled 40.2 billion yen (approximately 374.8 billion won), ranking second all-time behind the previous installment in the series, "Demon Slayer: Mugen Train."
Meanwhile, the success of the latest "Demon Slayer" film, along with "National Treasure" directed by Korean-Japanese filmmaker Lee Sang-il, significantly boosted Japan's film market performance last year. Japan's domestic box office revenue in 2024 increased more than 30 percent year-on-year to 274.452 billion yen (approximately 2.5597 trillion won), reaching its highest level since 2000.
