Sunyoung General Construction was found to have the most defect rulings among apartment builders over the past six months, according to data released by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT).
MOLIT on the 29th disclosed the number and processing status of apartment defect cases filed with the Defect Review and Dispute Mediation Committee, along with the rankings of builders with the most defect rulings in the first half of this year.
During the six months from September last year to February this year, Sunyoung General Construction received the most defect rulings from the committee with 249 cases, followed by Shindonga Construction (120 cases), Biltec General Construction (66 cases), Line (56 cases) and SG Construction (55 cases).
MOLIT has been publishing the list approximately every six months since September 2023. On a five-year cumulative basis from March 2021, Sunyoung General Construction (383 cases) also topped the list, followed by Daemyung General Construction (318 cases), SM Merchant Marine (311 cases), Jeil Construction (299 cases) and Daewoo Engineering & Construction (293 cases).
"The rankings of top builders, which had been similar since the first release in September 2023, shifted significantly in this announcement due to a decrease in detailed defect counts among major builders," MOLIT said. "The total number of defect cases has been continuously declining since the third release in October 2024."
The ministry added, "This is believed to be the result of strengthened quality control driven by periodic disclosure of the list, as well as prompt handling of defect repairs."
MOLIT has also been publishing defect ruling ratios — calculated based on the number of detailed defect rulings relative to the total units supplied by complexes that received defect rulings — in response to criticism that larger builders inevitably face more rulings due to higher supply volumes.
Additionally, the committee handled a total of 4,761 cases last year, with an annual average of 4,617 defect reviews, dispute mediations and adjudications over the five years from 2021 through last year.
