The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) signed a tripartite memorandum of understanding with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and the Patent Court on Monday at the Daejeon Government Complex to strengthen Korea's intellectual property competitiveness in the digital and artificial intelligence era.
The agreement aims to enhance national IP competitiveness in response to the digital and AI transformation by organically linking each institution's policy, regulatory, practical, and research capabilities spanning from IP creation to dispute resolution, while promoting personnel exchanges and joint cooperation projects.
The three institutions plan to establish a strategic cooperation framework for IP responses in the digital and AI era and pursue joint projects encompassing IP creation, dispute resolution, and talent development. To this end, they will hold joint academic events, share practical experience in dispute resolution, conduct joint research on AI-based IP issues, and operate personnel exchange and education programs. They also plan to designate responsible departments at each institution and form an inter-agency consultative body to ensure practical implementation of the agreement.
KIPO has been operating an Advanced Intellectual Property (AIP) executive program with KAIST and the Patent Court to provide education combining technology and law. The office has also been strengthening cooperation in IP dispute resolution, including dispatching technical examiners to the Patent Court. Through this MOU, the institutions will review their ongoing cooperative projects and expand collaboration into areas of IP creation, dispute response, and resolution.
"We expect this will further strengthen IP creation and protection systems befitting the digital and AI transformation era," KIPO Commissioner Kim Yong-sun said.
