Goyang city in Gyeonggi Province will begin full operation of a public solar power facility installed on the rooftop of Kintex Exhibition Center 1 starting January next year.
The facility, built on unused rooftop space with 1 billion won in city funding, has a generation capacity of 256kW and is expected to produce 330,000kWh of electricity annually, generating 70 million won in power sales revenue.
Goyang city announced Wednesday that it has secured an additional 2.6 billion won, including 1.1 billion won in national funding and 1 billion won in city funding, after being selected for the renewable energy distribution support project organized by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment.
The city plans to invest 1.1 billion won to install building-integrated photovoltaic modules (BIPV, 52kW) on building walls and geothermal heat pump equipment (735kW) underground. The three-dimensional structure utilizing rooftop, walls and underground space is expected to save an additional 50 million won annually in electricity costs.
The project is also expected to reduce 50 tons of carbon dioxide annually, equivalent to the environmental effect of planting approximately 10,000 pine trees.
"We plan to continue expanding renewable energy distribution with the goal of achieving RE100 (100% renewable energy use)," a Goyang city official said.
