South Gyeongsang Province announced Wednesday that its dedicated tax revenue management team has uncovered 12.8 billion won ($9.4 million) in hidden tax sources since its launch.
The provincial government established the Tax Revenue Management Team as a task force within its taxation division to identify overlooked local tax revenues. Staff dispatched from the province and three municipalities—Changwon, Haman County, and Hamyang County—conducted consulting on local taxes across all cities and counties over the past year. This marks the first such initiative nationwide, with field-focused proactive administration yielding tangible results.
The team initially set a target of 10 billion won. Through systematic inspections and consulting covering all stages of local taxation from acquisition to ownership, the team exceeded its goal. The review covered 11 items across four categories: appropriateness of tax rate application for acquisition taxes and heavy taxation, application of tax base amounts, taxation status of regional resource facility taxes, and appropriateness of land classification for property taxes. The effort identified 12.8 billion won in tax revenues that had fallen through the cracks.
"This tax consulting initiative is a first step toward establishing fair taxation principles under the law, beyond simply securing tax revenue," said Park Hyun-sook, head of the taxation division at South Gyeongsang Province. "We will build a permanent consulting system for all local taxes to protect honest taxpayers while thoroughly managing evaded and overlooked tax sources."
