Toyota Motor has unveiled the ninth-generation Hilux pickup truck, introducing the all-new Hilux BEV, the first pure electric version of its iconic pickup known for durability.
The Hilux BEV maintains the model's signature quality, durability, and reliability (QDR) while combining zero-emission performance to significantly expand market reach. The BEV model offers an attractive option particularly for fleet customers pursuing zero emissions.
The Hilux exterior was developed under the theme of "Tough and Agile" and is unified into a single double-cab style. The pure electric model omits the traditional front grille for aerodynamic purposes and features dedicated alloy wheels. A rear deck step has been added for easier access.
The interior draws influence from the Toyota Land Cruiser with enhanced perceived quality. The instrument panel and central infotainment system feature display panels up to 12.3 inches. The model adopts a single-action shift-by-wire drive selector for intuitive operation, along with off-road elements.
The Hilux BEV features an eAxle-based permanent all-wheel-drive (AWD) system producing a combined 193 horsepower. Torque output is 20.9 kg.m for the front axle and 27.4 kg.m for the rear. Notably, the BEV powertrain was specially designed for off-road performance, offering excellent durability across various driving conditions.
The vehicle is equipped with a 59.2 kWh battery pack designed to protect against damage and water intrusion, maintaining the same water fording capability as existing internal combustion engine models. Multi-terrain Select enhances off-road performance, effectively replicating the "L4" gear mode of conventional Hilux models.
Payload capacity is approximately 715 kg, with a towing capacity of 1,600 kg. The targeted WLTP driving range is approximately 240 km. Development is underway aiming for best-in-class charging performance. For daily performance maintenance, the BEV model features a dedicated transmission oil cooler and sub-radiator for enhanced cooling.
Safety has also been addressed. Electronic Power Steering (EPS) is applied for the first time in the Hilux, improving maneuverability and agility while contributing to off-road shock absorption. The Toyota T-Mate Safety Package includes low-speed acceleration suppression, Proactive Driving Assist, and an emergency driving stop system.
The all-new Hilux BEV is scheduled for market launch starting December 2025, with detailed specifications and pricing to be announced soon.
