Park Hee-chul, a professor of radiation oncology at Samsung Medical Center, was inaugurated Tuesday as the 28th president of the Korean Liver Cancer Association. His term runs for one year, from that day through June 2027.
The Korean Liver Cancer Association, which launched as the Liver Cancer Study Group in 1999, has led multidisciplinary research and appropriate care for liver cancer. It has also focused on public outreach, including designating February 2 as Liver Cancer Day, conveying the message that "high-risk individuals aged 40 and older can be diagnosed with liver cancer early if they regularly undergo two tests (liver ultrasound and blood tests) twice a year."
The new president graduated from Yonsei University College of Medicine in 1992 and has served as a professor of radiation oncology at Samsung Medical Center since 2005. As director of the proton therapy center, he contributed to achieving 2,000 proton therapy cases for liver cancer in 2024 — the first by a single hospital in Korea. He is currently leading proton therapy research in the field of "FLASH," a next-generation radiation treatment. He also served as president of the Korean Society for Radiation Oncology from 2023 to 2025. During his term, he plans to focus on strengthening the association's global standing and moving one step closer to the public.
"Using technological advances that change by the day, such as artificial intelligence (AI), as a foundation, I will work with everyone to build a new future for the association," Park said.
