Memorable lines from the films of Park Chan-wook, one of Korea's leading master directors, can now be encountered in print.
According to Eulyoo Publishing on Tuesday, the "Park Chan-wook Screenplay Collection," an anthology that allows readers to experience the director's film world in text including his memorable lines, has been published.
The nine-volume screenplay anthology features nine of Park's representative directorial works: "Joint Security Area JSA" (2000), "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" (2002), "Oldboy" (2003), "Lady Vengeance" (2005), "I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK" (2006), "Thirst" (2009), "The Handmaiden" (2016), "Decision to Leave" (2022), and "No Other Choice" (2025).
Among these, the screenplays for three films — "Joint Security Area JSA," "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance," and "Oldboy" — are being officially published for the first time.
The screenplay anthology is expected to offer an opportunity to view at a glance how Park's worldview has evolved. Readers can examine how "Lady Vengeance," which deals with revenge and kidnapping like "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance," inherited certain aspects of the earlier work while differing from it, and how collaborations with different screenwriters brought about changes. Eulyoo Publishing said, "Fans who love director Park Chan-wook will be able to indulge in his film world with even greater pleasure."
