
As daytime highs above 30 degrees Celsius continue, more people are turning to handheld fans (portable fans). A warning has drawn attention that directing a portable fan's airflow at the face for extended periods can lead to conditions such as nasal dryness.
According to the medical community Wednesday, nasal dryness is a condition in which the nasal mucosa loses moisture and becomes dry. It can be caused by dry environments, long flights, hot environments, and dusty environments.
The inside of the nose normally maintains adequate humidity through nasal mucus and other fluids, performing a humidifying function that moistens air breathed in from outside. However, exposure to airflow from a portable fan for a long time can lower the humidity inside the nose, leading to "nasal dryness," in which the interior of the nose becomes dry.
Nasal dryness can cause symptoms including: a dry or congested feeling inside the nose; itchiness and a slight burning sensation; nasal congestion; crusting and odor; nosebleeds; and a reduced sense of smell. Particular caution is needed for those already suffering from rhinitis or sinusitis.
To prevent nasal dryness, it is important to maintain appropriate indoor temperature and humidity, and to avoid stimulating the nose by frequently touching or picking it. Adequate hydration and mucosal care, such as nasal rinsing when necessary, are also recommended.
For the health of not only the nose but also the respiratory tract, eyes, and skin, it is advisable to keep a portable fan at a distance from the body when using it. If a dry feeling in the nose persists, one should visit an otolaryngologist for an accurate diagnosis and treatment.
Record Heat Wave Coming
Meanwhile, this summer is expected to bring temperatures higher than average. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration's "Three-Month Outlook (June–August 2026)," this summer will see higher-than-average temperatures, with heavy rain expected mainly in June and July. Forecasts also raised the probability of an El Niño at 80% this summer and 90% this autumn. An El Niño is declared when sea surface temperatures in specific monitoring zones in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific remain at least 0.5 degrees above average for more than five months. This is a cause of abnormal torrential rains, droughts, and heat waves around the world.
