The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said it will hold a meeting with arts and culture directors from all 17 metropolitan cities and provinces at the Government Complex Sejong on Tuesday afternoon to discuss ways to implement field-centered arts and culture policies.
"This meeting was arranged to promote balanced regional development of cultural policy, so that anyone, anywhere can create and enjoy diverse and refined arts and culture, based on communication and solid cooperation between the central and local governments," the ministry said. "In particular, it is a gathering pursued amid a shared understanding that close cooperation between the central and local governments is essential to respond to recent rapid changes in regional structure, such as the establishment of the 'five-pole, three-special-zone system' and the launch of 'integrated metropolitan cities.'"
At the meeting, participants will share the current status of major cultural policies of the central and local governments and discuss matters for the development of the regional arts and culture ecosystem. These include measures to substantially expand support for regional arts and culture organizations, expand and revitalize the operation of arts and culture infrastructure reflecting regional characteristics, and support the creative activities and protect the rights of local artists.
The ministry plans to gather suggestions and field opinions from the regions raised at the meeting and actively reflect them in the process of establishing and promoting related policies going forward.
"We will hold these meetings regularly so that the meeting of arts and culture directors from the 17 metropolitan cities and provinces does not end as a one-time event, and develop it into a permanent channel of communication between the central and regional levels in the cultural field," said Jung Hyang-mi, head of the ministry's Arts and Culture Policy Office.
