The zombie film "Gunche" has surpassed 5 million cumulative admissions 24 days after its release. It is the second film among this year's releases to top 5 million admissions.
Distributor Showbox announced Tuesday morning that "Gunche" had passed the 5 million mark. Among films released this year, only two have surpassed 5 million admissions: "The Man Who Lives with the King," which recorded 10 million admissions, and "Gunche."
Released on Oct. 21, "Gunche" topped 1 million admissions in just four days. It then surpassed 2 million on its fifth day, 3 million on its 10th day, and 4 million on its 14th day, drawing audiences at a rapid pace. However, it reached the 5 million mark more slowly than "The Man Who Lives with the King," which passed 5 million on its 18th day after release.
"Gunche" tells the story of survivors trying to stay alive in a sealed building where a zombie infection outbreak has occurred. It was directed by Yeon Sang-ho, who directed zombie films such as "Train to Busan" (2016) and "Peninsula" (2020). The cast includes Jun Ji-hyun, Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, Shin Hyun-been, Kim Shin-rok, and Go Soo.
Culture, Sports and Tourism Minister Choi Hwi-young congratulated "Gunche" on passing 5 million admissions on his social networking service (SNS) the same day. "I deeply admire the modern dancers, choreographers, and actors who played the infected with bone-chilling, hair-raising terror," Choi said. "Their overwhelming expressions and movements, which cannot be found anywhere else, truly reached the level of art. I send my wholehearted applause."
