The geomungo, a stringed instrument carrying a thousand years of history, meets rock, electronic music and hip-hop, bringing audiences a new sound that crosses tradition and modernity, East and West.
Geomungo player Park Da-ul will hold a solo concert, "HIP, 樂," at Geoam Art Hall in Seoul at 4 p.m. on June 13. The concert is a stage where Park, who has built her career on traditional Korean music, presents her own musical world by combining electronic sound with contemporary sound.
A graduate of the Department of Korean Music at Seoul National University, Park earned recognition early in her career, winning the gold prize at the Dong-A Korean Music Competition and the grand prize at the KBS Korean Music Competition. Rather than confining herself to traditional playing methods, she has broadened her scope by researching the percussive elements of the geomungo and new techniques.
In particular, she drew attention on JTBC's "Super Band 2" with performances using the geomungo and electronic instruments. With the band KARDI, formed afterward, she built a distinctive musical world by fusing the geomungo with various genres including rock, electronic music and hip-hop. She also recently performed at the Korea-France state dinner.
For this concert, she teams up with guitarist Shin Ji-hoon, with whom she has worked for a long time. A graduate of the Department of Applied Music at Hanyang University, Shin has performed at the opening stage of the Jarasum International Jazz Festival, won the gold prize at the Korea University Korean Music Festival, and released his first full-length album, "WIRELESS."
Tickets for Park Da-ul's "HIP, 樂" can be booked through NOL Ticket, with all seats priced at 70,000 won. A 5,000 won discount is offered to followers of Geoam Art Hall's Instagram account. The program will be announced at a later date.
