Busan Concert Hall is set to present a large-scale classical music festival featuring Artistic Director Chung Myung-whun and violinist Yang In-mo to celebrate the venue's first anniversary.
The Busan metropolitan government announced that the "Busan Concert Hall First Anniversary Festival" will be held at the venue from July 2 to July 8.
For the opening performance on July 2, the Asia Philharmonic Orchestra (APO), Busan Metropolitan Chorus, and Ulsan Metropolitan Chorus will perform Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 "Choral" under Chung's baton. Top Korean vocalists including soprano Lee Hye-ji, mezzo-soprano Yang Song-mi, tenor Kim Jung-hoon, and baritone Park Joo-sung will also take the stage.
Mahler's Symphony No. 5 will be performed on July 5. Chung and the APO plan to deliver the essence of the large-scale symphony through Mahler's signature delicate sonorities and philosophical depth.
In the July 7 concert "To the New World, Together," violinist Yang In-mo will appear as soloist for Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto. The APO will then join 20 young musicians from Busan to perform Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 "From the New World." Busan Concert Hall said the program "embodies an artistic vision in which generations, regions, and cultures come together."
A chamber music series will also be held in the Chamber Hall on July 6 and 8. Pianist Bae Gil and APO members will perform works including Schumann's Piano Quintet and Shostakovich's Piano Trio. On the final day, Chung himself will take the stage as pianist to perform Beethoven's Piano Trio "Ghost" and Brahms's Piano Quartet.
