The late actress Yoon Suk-hwa (1956-2025) has been posthumously awarded the Silver Crown Cultural Medal, it was belatedly disclosed. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced Sunday that it had decided to posthumously confer the Silver Crown Cultural Medal on the late actress and recently delivered the medal to her bereaved family.
Earlier, on December 19 last year — the day Yoon passed away — Culture Minister Choi Hwi-young visited her funeral altar and said, "As a leading Korean theater actress, she contributed to the development of Korea's performing arts for a long time," indicating that the ministry would push for a posthumous cultural medal. The ministry explained that it conducted an evaluation of her achievements over approximately six months thereafter.
Born in Seoul in 1956, Yoon made her debut in 1975 with the play "Taste of Honey." She rose to stardom in the theater world through performances in works such as "Agnes of God," "Hamlet," and "Letter to My Daughter." She also served as chairperson of the Korean Theater Artists Welfare Foundation. Yoon underwent brain tumor surgery in 2022 and passed away last year while battling the illness.
