The National Museum of Korea announced Monday that Director Yu Hong-jun will deliver a special lecture titled "The Life and Art of Danwon Kim Hong-do" on June 2 at 2 p.m. at Theater "Yong" inside the National Museum of Korea in Yongsan, Seoul.
The event is a lecture tied to the calligraphy and painting gallery's thematic exhibition "Danwon Kim Hong-do, Painting His Era" (May 4 to August 2), which presents masterpieces by the Joseon Dynasty's prodigious painter Danwon Kim Hong-do (1745-1806). Director Yu plans to comprehensively illuminate Kim's life and artistic world.
Danwon Kim Hong-do was not only a master of genre painting but also a painter who demonstrated outstanding skill in various fields including landscape painting and bird-and-flower painting. He showcased his abilities in diverse ways, reflecting the demands of his era ranging from traditional court painter styles to Western painting techniques. The exhibition presents his late masterpieces as "Masterpieces of the Season," including the "Danwon Genre Painting Album" (Treasure), which demonstrates his profound artistic achievement, as well as privately owned works such as "Girosesangyedo" (also known as "Manwoldae Gyehoedo"), "Chongseokjeongdo," and "Nomaedo."
The special lecture will examine Kim Hong-do's life and art in greater depth, focusing on representative works from the exhibition and his major paintings. By comprehensively surveying his body of work from early pieces to his late years, the lecture is expected to provide an opportunity for a broader understanding of Danwon's artistic world.
Applications for the lecture will be accepted online on a first-come, first-served basis. Access to the reservation site will be available from 2 p.m. on May 21 through the National Museum of Korea's website and Instagram.
