The Disney film "Frozen," which sparked a global sensation, has been reborn as a musical and will take the Korean stage for the first time.
S&Co, a musical production, investment and distribution company, announced that the Broadway musical "Frozen" will be staged at Charlotte Theater in Seoul from August 13 through March 1 of next year. The production is based on the animated film of the same name, which was released in 2013 and triggered a worldwide phenomenon.
The musical "Frozen" extended its popularity to London's West End and a North American tour following its Broadway success. It maintains the core narrative of the original while multidimensionally expanding the emotional arc between the sisters Elsa and Anna.
Above all, the large-scale staging of iconic scenes from the film is cited as a key driver of its commercial success. The signature number "Let It Go" sung by Elsa, along with the ice palace and the kingdom of Arendelle illuminated by the aurora, unfold as spectacles combining special effects, stage design and choreography. The production team said, "Through design and stage direction grounded in Scandinavian nature and worldview, we will deliver a fantastical experience."
A large number of Korea's top musical actors will appear in this Korean premiere. Jung Sun-ah, Jung Yu-ji and Min Kyung-ah have been cast as Elsa. The role of Anna will be played by Park Jin-joo, Hong Geum-bi and Choi Ji-hye. Cha Yoon-hae and Shin Jae-beom will play Kristoff, Kim Won-bin and Hwang Geon-ha will play Hans, and Jung Won-young, Han Gyu-jung and Lee Chang-ho will appear as Olaf. In particular, Jung Sun-ah, who plays Elsa, is regarded as a leading diva who has headlined major productions including "Wicked" and "Aida." The production team described her as "an actress equipped with presence, charisma and delicate emotional expression."
Adrian Sarple, associate director from Disney Theatrical Group, said, "What matters most is the genuine chemistry between Elsa and Anna," adding, "Korean actors have an outstanding sense for delivering a story persuasively."
The first ticket sales will begin at 2 p.m. on the 29th. Tickets will be available for performances from the opening night on August 13 through September 11. Charlotte Theater members and newsletter subscribers can participate in pre-sales one day earlier on the 28th. All paid ticket holders for opening week performances will receive a special ticket. Following the Seoul run, performances at Dream Theater in Busan are also scheduled for 2027.
