Starting Wednesday, 2.25 million movie ticket discount coupons worth 6,000 won each will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Since the distribution coincides with "Culture Day" (the last Wednesday of each month), when moviegoers can watch films for 10,000 won, timing the purchase to stack both benefits allows customers to see a movie for just 4,000 won.
According to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korean Film Council, 2.25 million discount coupons worth 6,000 won each will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 10 a.m. Wednesday. The ministry previously secured 27.1 billion won in movie discount support funding through last month's supplementary budget, under which it plans to distribute a total of 4.5 million discount coupons. The first 2.25 million coupons will be released beginning Wednesday, with the remaining 2.25 million to be distributed in July, the peak season.
The coupons can be used on Wednesday through the websites and applications of multiplex chains CGV, Lotte Cinema, Megabox, and Cine Q. Two coupons per person will be automatically deposited in each user's online member coupon inbox at each theater, and can be applied when paying for tickets. However, discounts will end once each theater exhausts its allotment, and any unused coupons in member inboxes will automatically expire.
The coupons can be stacked with existing movie discounts, including "Culture Day" (the last Wednesday of each month), disability discounts, senior discounts, youth discounts, and early-bird discounts. For example, the second and last Wednesdays of every month are "Culture Days," when movies can be watched for 10,000 won between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. — meaning stacking both discounts brings the ticket price down to 4,000 won.
Beyond multiplex chains, the coupons will also be available at various other types of theaters, including independent and art-house cinemas, small community theaters, and senior cinemas. Theaters that cannot distribute coupons through their websites due to system limitations will hand them out on-site on a first-come, first-served basis.
