The Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra is taking classical music beyond concert halls to parks, museums, and commuters' evening routes. The initiative aims to lower the barrier to classical music, reaching not only culturally underserved communities but also the general public.
The Seoul Philharmonic announced Tuesday that it will hold a total of 49 "Everyday Classics" performances across Seoul this year. The orchestra has consolidated its previously fragmented social outreach programs under a single unified brand for more systematic management. The performances are organized into four program categories comprising 12 individual programs, spanning large-scale orchestral concerts, chamber music, and collaborations with musicians with disabilities.
The Riverside Concert, a flagship program of the outdoor "Joyful Classics" series, will be held on June 13 at Yeouido Hangang Park with a fireworks display under the baton of Kim Sun-wook. On September 19, Music Director Jaap van Zweden will conduct a park concert at Seoul Children's Grand Park.
"A Very Special Concert," the signature program of the "Classics Together" series for underserved communities, was launched at the initiative of Music Director van Zweden. The program features performances by musicians with disabilities alongside Seoul Philharmonic members. An orchestral performance was held at the Concert Hall of Seoul Arts Center last month, and chamber music concerts will follow on July 3 and November 13 at the IBK Chamber Hall of Seoul Arts Center.
The "Classics in the City" series will be staged at performance venues and public facilities across Seoul's 25 autonomous districts. Orchestral concerts will take place on May 14–15 and November 5–6 at venues including Soongsil University's Han Kyung-chik Memorial Hall, Gangdong Art Center's Grand Theater, Nowon Culture and Arts Center, and Yangcheon Culture Center. Performances utilizing lobbies and outdoor spaces will be held at Seoul Museum of Craft Art (June 3), Seoul Museum of History (June 24), Seoul Museum of Art (June 26), and Hanseong Baekje Museum (October 28). Evening concerts with talk sessions for commuters will also be held at the Anglican Cathedral of Seoul (April 23, July 16, and October 1) and Jeongdong First Methodist Church (July 14). Through the "Classics With" program, the orchestra will collaborate with external partners such as LG Arts Center and SM Entertainment to broaden the classical music audience and attract new listeners.
Performance details are available on the Seoul Philharmonic's integrated platform. "We will continue to expand diverse programs to widen opportunities for citizens to enjoy classical music and improve cultural accessibility," a Seoul Philharmonic official said.
