Culture Minister Choi Hwi-young attended the opening game of the professional baseball season on Monday and called for collective action to eradicate ticket scalping. Since the BTS concert at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul on March 21, the minister has been focusing on eliminating scalping in both sports and entertainment.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said Minister Choi visited Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul for the LG Twins versus KT Wiz game to celebrate the start of the new professional baseball season and cheer on the players. The minister met with club officials and commended their efforts in preparing for the new season and supporting players to perform at their best. He also inspected the overall spectator environment from the audience's perspective, including entry routes, seating operations, safety management and convenience facilities.
According to the ministry, Minister Choi held a meeting with Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) Commissioner Heo Gu-yeon, LG Twins CEO Kim In-seok and other officials. They discussed various tasks for the sustained growth of professional baseball, including creating a fan-centered viewing environment, expanding stadium facilities and infrastructure, strengthening club competitiveness and financial sustainability, and broadening youth development and player training programs.
The participants also agreed that improving spectator convenience, raising service standards and establishing fair ticketing practices must be pursued together to translate growing attendance demand into sustainable growth.
