Seoul Arts Center's "Piano Special," part of its World Star Series, has returned after a two-year hiatus. Running from May through September, the series invites three pianists active on the world stage, each presenting a distinct program.
The series opens at 7:30 p.m. on May 27 with next-generation pianist Eva Gevorgyan in her first visit to Korea. She drew international attention at the 2021 International Chopin Piano Competition, advancing to the finals as the youngest contestant at age 17. The pianist in her early twenties takes on works demanding formidable technique and philosophical interpretation. Her program begins with Franck's "Prelude, Chorale and Fugue," followed by Rachmaninoff's "Études-Tableaux Op. 33," Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker" Suite (arranged by Pletnev), and Liszt's "Années de pèlerinage, Year 2: Italy" — selections including "Sposalizio" and "Après une lecture de Dante: Fantasia quasi Sonata."
