The Changdeokgung Palace Management Office under the Korea Heritage Service's Royal Palaces and Tombs Center announced on the 23rd that it will hold "Letting Light and Wind into Changdeokgung," an event opening all changho (窓戶, traditional windows and doors) of the palace's major buildings from April 24 through April 5.
"This event was organized to better protect heritage through routine maintenance by opening wide the windows and doors of palace buildings that are normally kept closed, letting natural light and wind flow indoors, and to offer visitors an opportunity to discover another side of the palace landscape through the opened changho," the Korea Heritage Service explained.
According to the Korea Heritage Service, changho are windows and doors installed for entry, viewing, ventilation and lighting. They play a crucial role in extending the lifespan of wooden architecture by allowing light into building interiors and enabling smooth air circulation. Changdeokgung already manages its buildings by regularly opening and closing some changho, but during this event period, changho of major palace halls will be opened more extensively so that visitors can directly experience the maintenance process.
Any visitor to Changdeokgung can participate in the changho opening event during the period without a separate reservation.
