BTS will hold its comeback concert in Gwanghwamun, Seoul on the 21st, with analysts projecting the group's overseas tour will generate more than 100 trillion won ($70 billion) in economic impact.
The tour is being hailed as a milestone for K-pop's global ascent and a "global mega-event" that sets new standards for the international music industry.
According to industry sources on the 16th, the economic and cultural impact of "BTS Comeback Live: ARIRANG" is expected to reach astronomical proportions. Major international media outlets forecast it will surpass the $5 billion "Swiftnomics" effect generated by Taylor Swift's tours.
The Korea Culture and Tourism Institute previously estimated that a single BTS domestic concert generates up to 1.2 trillion won in economic impact, including indirect effects such as intellectual property revenue and enhanced K-pop prestige. With 82 confirmed performances across 34 cities overseas, total economic impact is projected to reach 100 trillion won.
The outlook for "BTSnomics" has been further boosted by Netflix animation "K-Pop Demon Hunters" winning two awards at the 98th Academy Awards, including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song, cementing K-pop's status as a global mainstream genre and "super IP."
"The Gwanghwamun Plaza concert links BTS—who have primarily performed overseas—with Seoul, Korea, imprinting this connection in the minds of global audiences," said pop culture critic Jeong Deok-hyun. "With over 50 million viewers across 190 countries watching the Netflix livestream, this has become an unprecedented national event, with economic effects too vast to calculate."
This marks the first time a K-pop artist has performed at Gwanghwamun Plaza, with the concert to be broadcast live on Netflix.
