A new study has found that maintaining an oatmeal-based diet for just two days can reduce cholesterol levels, drawing widespread attention.
Researchers at the University of Bonn in Germany recently announced that patients with metabolic syndrome who followed an oatmeal-based diet for 48 hours showed an average 10% decrease in LDL, commonly known as "bad cholesterol." The finding that just two days of dietary management produced noticeable effects has garnered significant interest.
The research team recruited 68 adults with metabolic syndrome and divided them into two groups. One group consumed 300 grams of rolled oats three times daily for two days, with calorie intake restricted to approximately 1,100-1,200 kcal. The control group maintained the same caloric intake without oatmeal.
Analysis showed that the oatmeal group's LDL cholesterol decreased by an average of 16.3 mg/dL compared to the control group, while total cholesterol dropped by 15.6 mg/dL. This translates to approximately a 10% reduction in LDL and an 8% decrease in total cholesterol. Furthermore, follow-up observations six weeks after the diet ended showed cholesterol levels remained below baseline, demonstrating the potential lasting effects of short-term intensive consumption.
Blood analysis also confirmed significant increases in concentrations of ferulic acid and dihydroferulic acid, both antioxidant compounds. Researchers interpreted this as evidence that short-term oatmeal consumption goes beyond simple fiber intake, directly affecting metabolic processes by altering the gut microbiome environment.
In contrast, a group that consumed moderate amounts of oatmeal—approximately 80 grams daily for six weeks—showed no significant cholesterol changes, indicating that short-term high-dose consumption is more effective for metabolic improvement.
"While not at the level of modern pharmaceuticals, we confirmed that LDL levels noticeably decreased with just a 48-hour diet," said Professor Marie-Christine Simon, who led the study. "This is significant in that short, intensive interventions can induce long-term changes."
The research team emphasized that changes in gut microbiota served as the key mechanism. Analysis of participants' blood and stool samples showed that specific beneficial bacteria increased after oatmeal consumption, producing antioxidant substances such as ferulic acid that positively influenced cholesterol metabolism through the bloodstream.
Oatmeal has gained popularity as a diet food due to its high satiety and rich dietary fiber content. Beta-glucan, which comprises 4-5% of oatmeal's dietary fiber, is particularly effective for weight management as it helps eliminate waste buildup and expel intestinal toxins.
