This year's opera season promises an abundance of highly anticipated productions. Major works by Puccini and Verdi, Wagner's Ring Cycle, and Korea's first co-production with China await audiences. Seoul Arts Center and the Korea National Opera are building signature repertoires, while Daegu Opera House breaks new ground with cross-border collaboration.
Seoul Arts Center presents Puccini's "Turandot" as its flagship production. Following last year's world premiere of the new opera "Water Spirit," the center is betting on authentic Italian repertoire this year. Puccini's final and greatest masterpiece combines magnificent music, spectacular staging, and exotic narrative. Korean audiences have previously relied on touring foreign productions. While two Italian productions generated buzz in late 2024, performances at KSPO Dome and COEX special stages left audiences wanting in terms of acoustics and overall quality. This year's production at Seoul Arts Center's Opera House raises expectations for a proper theatrical experience.
Roberto Abbado, newly appointed music director of the Korean National Symphony Orchestra, will conduct, promising an authentic Puccini sound. Tenor Paik Seok-jong, who has performed at the Metropolitan Opera and Royal Opera House, makes his full-production debut in Korea as Calaf. Tenor Kim Young-woo of Germany's Cologne Opera is double-cast in the role. Soprano Eva Plonka and Seo Sun-young share the title role, while Hwang Su-mi and Shin Eun-hye alternate as Liù. Performances run July 22-23 and 25-26, totaling four shows.
The Korea National Opera's production of Wagner's "Das Rheingold" is equally anticipated. As the prologue to the four-opera "Ring of the Nibelung," it launches an ambitious journey to complete the entire cycle by 2028. The tragic saga of gods, dwarves, and giants fighting over a ring symbolizing absolute power showcases the essence of Wagner's artistry. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the Ring Cycle's 1876 premiere in Bayreuth, adding special significance.
German opera specialist Lothar Koenigs conducts, while Lorenzo Fioroni, acclaimed for last year's "The Love for Three Oranges," directs. Performances are scheduled for October 29 through November 1.
The Korea National Opera's Korean premiere of "Peter Grimes," running June 18-21, is critics' must-see opera of the year. Benjamin Britten premiered this psychological thriller in 1945, adapting George Crabbe's poem "The Borough." The work sharply portrays how social prejudice and mob violence destroy an isolated individual, marking a crucial turning point in 20th-century opera.
Seoul Metropolitan Opera revives Giuseppe Verdi's "Nabucco" for the first time in 40 years since its 1986 Korean premiere. Premiered at La Scala in 1842, "Nabucco" instantly established Verdi as Italy's preeminent composer. Set against sixth-century BCE Babylonia's conquest of Jerusalem and the Jewish exile, the opera channels the thirst for power and longing for freedom through grand choruses and explosive arias.
The "Hebrew Slaves' Chorus," known as "Va, pensiero, sull'ali dorate" (Go, thought, on golden wings), expresses a displaced people's sorrow and hope for return, remaining one of opera's most beloved choral pieces. Legend holds that thousands sang this chorus under Arturo Toscanini's baton at Verdi's 1901 funeral. A 60-member citizen choir joins this production, promising even greater resonance.
The staging evokes an operatic "Game of Thrones" with its intense drama and "chessboard of fate" concept visualizing ancient primal energy. Large-scale sets, dynamic blocking, and symbolic costumes maximize the grand opera's scale. Four performances run April 9-12 at Sejong Center for the Performing Arts.
Daegu Opera House's highlight is Verdi's "Rigoletto," April 24-25. This marks the first Korea-China co-production in Korean opera history, jointly produced and distributed with China's National Centre for the Performing Arts. Following Daegu performances, the production travels to Beijing in September. Baritones Lee Dong-hwan and Leon Kim share the title role, sopranos Zhang Yuanqin and Lee Hye-jung alternate as Gilda, and tenors Yoo Jun-ho and Kwon Jae-hee are cast as the Duke of Mantua.
Private organizations continue the operatic momentum. The Korea Opera Association's 17th Korea Opera Festival offers diverse repertoire. The Opera House stage hosts Beseto Opera's "Così fan tutte" (May 22-24), La Bella Opera's "Lucia di Lammermoor" (May 29-31), and Gloria Opera's "L'elisir d'amore" (June 5-7). Jayu Small Theater welcomes family audiences with The Muse Opera's "The Grandfather Who Loved Cheese" (June 27-28) and Iroum Culture's "Hansel and Gretel" (July 4-5).
Music critic Song Ju-ho said, "This year's opera lineup features distinctive programming ranging from classical masterpieces to contemporary works. It is particularly encouraging that theaters are actively pursuing in-house productions."
