Hair health significantly impacts both appearance and self-confidence. While many people invest in various products and styling techniques, experts emphasize that basic scalp and hair care is most important.
Dr. Sharon Wong, a British dermatologist and co-founder of health brand DOSE, recently told the Daily Mail about eight common habits that seriously damage hair and scalp health.
Tight Ponytails and Braids
The first habit Dr. Wong cited was tightly bound ponytails and braids. Excessive tension on hair follicles can cause "traction alopecia," and repeated habits increase the risk of permanent hair loss.
"If your scalp hurts, you've already pulled too tight," Dr. Wong said. "Keep hair loosely tied and avoid repeating the same style for extended periods."
Applying Oil to the Scalp
Scalp oiling can clog pores, worsening folliculitis, dandruff, and itching. Dr. Wong recommended moisture-attracting ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, aloe, and glycerin instead.
Using Flat Irons on Wet Hair
Rapid moisture evaporation causes "bubble hair," making strands break and split easily. Hair should be fully dried before applying heat protectant and using styling tools at low temperatures.
Extreme Dieting and Protein Deficiency
Approximately 95% of hair consists of keratin protein. Protein deficiency leads directly to hair loss and weakening. Dr. Wong emphasized maintaining protein-rich diets even during rapid weight loss.
Frequent Bleaching and Dyeing
Chemical treatments destroy bonds that maintain hair structure. Sufficient intervals between treatments and damage-repair products are recommended.
Sleeping with Wet Hair
Damp scalps create environments where bacteria and fungi thrive, causing dandruff, dermatitis, and folliculitis. Fully drying hair before bed is essential.
Not Washing Out Dry Shampoo
Residue clogs scalp pores, leading to itching, flaking, and breakouts. Hair should be washed after using dry shampoo, with weekly deep-cleansing treatments for frequent users.
Excessive Supplement Intake
Biotin and other hair supplements show no proven benefits without existing deficiency and may distort blood test results.
"Check actual nutritional deficiencies through blood tests and take supplements only when necessary," Dr. Wong said.
