The Korea National Symphony Concert Orchestra (KNCO), a subsidiary of the Korea National Symphony Orchestra, concluded its first-season final subscription concert on the 12th and will launch its second season next month.
At the performance held at Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, next-generation violinist Kim Hyun-seo appeared as guest soloist, performing the overture from Mozart's opera "The Marriage of Figaro," Violin Concerto No. 5, and Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 3 "Scottish." The program centered on classical repertoire resonated with audiences, energized by the young musicians. The concert notably invited underserved communities including local residents with disabilities, youth, and families, emphasizing the orchestra's role as a public arts organization.
KNCO is a youth-centered orchestra founded on 40 years of musical tradition accumulated by the Korea National Symphony Orchestra. With members averaging 31.6 years of age, the ensemble aims to become a model for the next generation by combining the expertise of established musicians with the fresh sensibilities and interpretations of younger artists.
The operational model draws from international orchestras. Modeled after the Chicago Symphony's Civic Orchestra and Japan's Hyogo Performing Arts Center Orchestra, KNCO was designed as a Korean youth orchestra pursuing both young musician development and community engagement.
Since its launch in July last year, the first cohort delivered 23 performances, expanding its reach through an invited performance at the Sejong Hangeul Festival closing ceremony, collaborations with the Sejong City Youth Symphony Orchestra, and master classes. Conductor Kim Yu-won expressed anticipation for the second season, stating, "We have been working to showcase KNCO's unique musical identity with our members." KNCO will begin its second-season subscription concerts next month.
