Christine Sun Kim, a 46-year-old Korean-American contemporary artist who translates her experience of deafness into visual art, has been selected as the artist for "MMCA X LG OLED Series 2026," the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA) announced on the 12th.
MMCA has been developing the "MMCA X LG OLED Series" since last year in partnership with LG Electronics to showcase experimentation and challenges in contemporary art. The series presents large-scale site-specific works at "Seoul Box," a 14-meter-high open exhibition space at MMCA Seoul, with sponsorship and advanced display technology support from LG Electronics. Artist Chusoo was selected for the inaugural edition last year.
Kim has explored the structures of communication and social relationships through various media including sound, language, drawing, performance, and video. Through works combining "graphic notation"—a system she devised to translate sound into visual language—with visual art expressions such as drawing, she visually investigates the invisible rules of communication and how language operates. Her work has drawn attention for expanding the experiences of the Deaf community into universal questions of accessibility and communication, while suggesting new possibilities for perception and relationships. Born in California, the artist is currently based in Berlin and had a major solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York last year. She was also named to "Power 100," the influential annual ranking by British art magazine ArtReview, for the first time last year.
At "MMCA X LG OLED Series 2026," opening July 31, Kim will present a new large-scale video installation based on animation. MMCA Director Kim Sung-hee said, "Christine Sun Kim's work presents a clear thematic consciousness about the relationship between language and society in a form that is both playful and open to multilayered interpretation," adding, "This project will mark an important turning point as the artist's practice expands significantly into digital animation as a medium."
