A daily cup of coffee could help reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome, a condition often called the modern epidemic, according to new research.
A research team at the University of São Paulo in Brazil recently published findings from an eight-year study tracking the diets and health conditions of 6,378 adults. The study found that participants who consumed an average of 469mg of polyphenols—antioxidants found in coffee—per day had a 23% lower risk of developing metabolic syndrome compared to those who consumed only 177mg. Metabolic syndrome is a precursor to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, characterized by the simultaneous presence of high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and abdominal obesity.
According to the research, adequate polyphenol intake alone can reduce the probability of heart disease and diabetes by nearly one-quarter. The research team explained that polyphenols go beyond simply reducing inflammation—they fundamentally alter the gut microbiome ecosystem, thereby lowering insulin resistance.
The researchers also noted that "consuming polyphenols from diverse sources—not just coffee, but also fresh fruits, vegetables, dark chocolate, and moderate amounts of wine—enhances the preventive effect." The findings were published in the latest issue of The Journal of Nutrition, an authoritative publication in the field of nutritional science.
Meanwhile, according to the "2024 Health Screening Statistical Yearbook" published by South Korea's National Health Insurance Service, seven out of ten Koreans are exposed to metabolic syndrome risk. The report showed that 23.9% of those screened have already been diagnosed with metabolic syndrome, while 45.9% fall into a "caution group" with one or two risk factors that could develop into metabolic syndrome.
