The Bumseok Academic Scholarship Foundation announced on the 9th that it has selected Professor Kim Byung-keuk of Yonsei University and Professor Kim Seung-hyun of Hanyang University as recipients of the 29th Bumseok Award.
Professor Kim Byung-keuk conducted the "OCCUPI Study," which analyzed how achieving stent optimization using optical coherence tomography (OCT) in patients with complex coronary artery lesions affects clinical outcomes, and identified relevant OCT evaluation criteria. The paper was published in The Lancet, one of the world's top three medical journals, simultaneously with its presentation at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC).
Professor Kim Seung-hyun has led advances in Korean neurology as a pioneer in domestic research on intractable neurological diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and dementia, achieving multi-layered results spanning basic research, clinical practice, and policy. He was recognized for contributing to improved international research competitiveness, particularly by proposing new treatment paradigms based on translational research in ALS.
The Bumseok Academic Scholarship Foundation was established in 1997 by the Eulji Foundation to honor the late Dr. Park Young-ha, known by his pen name Bumseok, for his dedication to advancing Korean medicine and cultivating talent, and to contribute to the public good. To date, the foundation has provided approximately 2.3 billion won in scholarships to 2,008 recipients. Cumulative support, including research grants and the Bumseok Award, totals 7.4 billion won.
"We consider it a meaningful endeavor to carry on Dr. Park Young-ha's spirit of 'Love for Humanity, Respect for Life,'" said Park Jun-sook, Chairman of the Bumseok Academic Scholarship Foundation. "We will continue to faithfully fulfill our role in advancing medicine and nurturing talent without forgetting his legacy."
