A woman in her 60s who suffered a fatal traffic accident on her way home from work has saved two lives through organ donation.
According to the Korea Organ Donation Agency on the 9th, Hong Yeon-bok, 66, donated both kidneys at Korea University Anam Hospital on December 4 last year, saving two lives.
Hong lost consciousness after being struck by a vehicle while crossing a street on her way home from work on November 15. She was rushed to the hospital but never regained consciousness.
Hong's family said she had previously filed a request to forgo life-sustaining treatment. They decided to proceed with the donation, believing she would have been happier knowing she could save someone's life in her final act.
Born the second of four children in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, Hong was known for her bright and active personality, always reaching out to those around her first. After retiring, she worked as a senior intern sanitation worker at a facilities management corporation. On her days off, she enjoyed walking her dog and listening to trot music, and often talked about wanting to attend an Lim Young-woong concert.
Her son, Min Gwang-hun, tearfully said, "Mom, raising us two sons must have been so hard. Thank you so much. I wish you could have lived longer to see your grandchildren."
He added, "Please rest peacefully in heaven. Be happy there, and please visit us in our dreams sometimes. See you again, Mom."
Lee Sam-yeol, president of the Korea Organ Donation Agency, said, "We will do our best to ensure that the love of donors and their families is delivered as hope to save other lives."
