A large-scale new installation by Lee Bul, a world-renowned artist representing Korea, has been unveiled at the atrium of Amorepacific's global headquarters in Yongsan, Seoul.
The massive balloon made of light, transparent material floats in mid-air, appearing buoyant yet precarious, hopeful yet somehow unsettling. Designed specifically for the wide, towering space of the Amorepacific headquarters atrium, the work transforms this everyday space into a realm of new sensations while offering a futuristic and overwhelming sculptural experience to the countless people who pass through daily.
The newly unveiled work is part of Lee Bul's "Willing To Be Vulnerable" series, which the artist has been developing since 2015 with "humanity's relentless aspiration toward utopia" as its core theme. Lee is known for exploring utopian imagination and collective emotions about the future through large-scale sculptures and environmental installations. This series has already garnered significant attention after being presented at the Sydney Biennale and the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin.
The new work, titled "Willing To Be Vulnerable - Transparent Balloon," utilizes light, transparent film and air currents. It effectively conveys the series' theme of reinterpreting symbols of modernity and their fragments while providing an immersive environment where complex emotions between ideal and reality, strength and vulnerability can be tangibly sensed.
Amorepacific said the project was undertaken "to reflect the company's vision of expanding the 'culture of beauty' while providing a meaningful opportunity to spotlight the creative practice of contemporary Korean artists within a global context."
